A "kidney diet mistake" I see too many people making - getting overly focused on one particular food or ingredient 🍌🍟🌮🧁

When you can't see the forest for the trees, that's a problem!

It's a waste of time and energy to get hyper-fixated on individual foods & their nutrient content, rather than considering how that food fits into your overall diet 🧐

For example - a high potassium food like avocado 🥑 2 oz of avocado has 275 mg of potassium.

If you struggle with high potassium levels, you might be feeling stressed out about that 275 mg potassium because it sounds like "a lot" - but at the same time failing to understand your total daily potassium limit and how this food fits into that.

Another example - worrying about eating cake for dessert at your cousin's birthday party, and the negative impact that might have 🍰

If you are eating cake for literally every meal? Okay, that's a problem we may need to address. But if that's one dessert in the midst of lots of other low sugar, fiber rich options - don't stress!!

Not knowing what to eat and stressing about every

Not knowing what to eat and stressing about every meal is EXHAUSTING.

Unfortunately, many people with CKD experience these feelings. It’s common to get diagnosed and get some super generic advice to “eat better” or “watch your sodium” but no further on guidance on what that means or how to do it!!

Also, just telling someone to eat better - as if one can just snap their fingers and improve their diet - without taking the time to talk in depth and assess someone’s challenges and barriers is kind of crappy.

That’s where dietitians like me come in - when you understand the right amount of sodium & other nutrients you need, you can then apply that info to the food choices you make 😌 and we can help you with realistic action steps to make these changes happen.
